The regulation 152/2015 establishes that after a period of transition, all the Verde Wine Region will be allowed to use in the commercialized bottles the denomination "Alvarinho wine", originally limited to the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço. This sub-region will be the only to be allowed to use a territorial denomination. The company Quintas de Melghaço, S.A., whose main shareholder is the municipality of Melgaço, asked Quaternaire Portugal to estimate the socio-economic impact of that regulation in the sub-region and QP team conceived a methodology that estimates that impact in terms of the GDP of the sub-region, of the prices of grape paid to local farmers and of spatial planning, considering the effect resulting from the vinyards that will be probably abandoned. At the same time, QP team worked on some measures in order that the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço may change its marketing policy to enhance the unique characteristics of the Alvarinho terroir.
