Quaternaire Portugal has been working, since late 2011, with the Alentejo and Ribatejo Tourism Regional Entity, in the World Heritage List submission process of Montado Cultural Landscape.

In a first stage the Quaternaire Portugal team developed a set of technical studies of survey and characterization of the Montado landscape, which allowed to find the attributes and values that justify the Outstanding Universal Value of the Montado, framing them in reference to the UNESCO Universal Heritage as well as a draft proposal for delimitation of the Site area.

Quaternaire Portugal team developed now, in partnership with Geoatributo, a comparative analysis of the Montado with other similar sites, registered or not, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The comparative analysis is an essent element of the application dossier to be submitted to UNESCO for the inscription of Montado Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage List.

The analysis sought to contribute significantly to the grounds of the value and significance of Site to apply, placing it in comparison against other heritage sites that, somehow, has characteristics that can be identified as similar. In this exercise the team tried to identify and characterize common elements between the various sites in question, clearly underlining what are the unique elements that distinguish the Montado Cultural Landscape of the remaining cultural landscapes and, in this perspective, justify its classification by UNESCO as World Heritage.

The analysis included the following comparison levels: on the one hand, comparison with other properties inscribed on the List of World Heritage, particularly in the category of living and evolving cultural landscape and, on the other hand, compared to areas inserted into the Mediterranean region originally occupied by Mediterranean forest and dominated multifunction systems.
