Quaternaire Portugal SA collaborated in drafting the Municipal Plan for Emergency and Civil Protection of Lajes do Pico (PMEPC Lajes do Pico), project prepared by Simbiente Açores. The PMEPC Lajes do Pico is a guiding document prepared by the municipality in cooperation with the Regional Service of Civil Protection and Fire Açores (SRPCBA), whose main objectives:

a) Provide the conditions and means necessary to minimize the adverse effects of a major accident or disaster;

b) Define the guidelines regarding the activities of the various institutions, offices and structures to engage in civil protection operations;

c) Set the management unity, coordination and control of actions to develop;

d) Coordinate and systematize the actions of support, promoting greater efficiency and speed of intervention of the entities involved;

e)Inventory the available means and resources in order to attend to a major accident or disaster;

f) Minimize loss of life and property, reduce or limit the effects of major accidents or disasters and restore as soon as possible, the minimum conditions of normalcy;

g) Ensure the creation of favorable conditions for the rapid, efficient and coordinated activation of all available means and resources;

h) Enable all the entities involved in the plan to keep the state of promptness necessary for the management of serious accidents or catastrophes;

i) Promote information of the population through awareness-raising actions, taking a self-protection culture and cooperation in emergency response structure.

The Municipal Plan for Emergency and Civil Protection is subject to periodic update and should be the subject of frequent exercises in order to test their operability.
