In 2008, under the coordination of Quaternaire Portughal (QP) the Institute for Douro and Port Wines asked for a broad-spectrum Strategic Plan for the Douro and Port Wines of the Demarcated Region of Douro. In 2015, the Association of the Enterprises of Port Wine, one of the most important stakeholders operating within the sector, representing the commercialisation and exports of the Douro DOC and Portv Wines, asked for an update of some dimensions of the strategic diagnosis of the Douro DOC and Port wine sector. The study explored among other dimensions the comparison between the growing notoriety and prominence of Douro and Port Wines at international level (namely in some important journals and reviews) and the persistence of some structural bottlenecks (already identified in 2008 study) penalising the future of the sector and of the Demarcated Region of Douro. The evolution of the land structure and of vineyards by quality of grapes, number of winemakers, links between the production and sales of Douro DOC and Portt Wine, chain value of the sector, average prices by categories of products, reexports of Port Wine in the EU. R&D activities and the complex regulation conditions of the sector have been some of the updated dimensions of analysis. The study end with the proposal of some project ideas to be presented to the ESIF support within the programming of Portugal 2020.
